The estimate Fashion Index from Svensk Handel Stil shows that Swedish sales of clothes in specialist shops, measured in comparable units and at current prices, rose by only 0.1 percent compared to the same month last year. The corresponding figure for sales in shoe stores show an increase of 0.6 percent.
Developments so far this year, from January to June:
Sales of clothing increased by 0.2 percent.
Footwear sales increased by 4.7 percent.
Sales of clothing sold through e-commerce, measured in current prices, increased by 7.1 percent compared with the same month last year. But from January to June, sales of clothing online declined by 2.0 percent.
“Although the calendar effect made it difficult to top last year, both clothing and shoes managed to crawl over the 0-mark”, says Svensk Handel Stil’s branch chairman Mikael Sandström.
“July will be a tough challenge to increase clothes sales as July last year increased by four percent.
“But E-commerce had a good June with a very good increase of just over seven percent. As we move into half-time in these football times, we can sum up the first half: clothing has a small plus of 0.2 percent while the shoes sales have been brilliant with an increase of 4.7 percent. E-commerce has according to our measurements surprisingly dropped by two percent”, says Mikael Sandström.
