Style indicies from the Svensk Handel Stil shows that August sales of clothing from specialist retailers, measured in comparable units and in current prices decreased by 10.8 percent compared to the same month last year.
The corresponding figure for sales in shoe stores show a decrease of 17.8 percent. So far this year, from January to August, sales of clothing has increased by 0.6 percent and footwear sales decreased by 0.7 percent.
”As expected, August was a poor month, but the extent of the decline was surprising”, says Mikael Sandström, branch chairman of the Svensk Handel Stil.
The comparison month was strong (plus five percent for clothing and ten percent for shoes) and July sales this year was good, which made summer sale not hung on to the same extent. Due to the warmt August, the start was a bit tentative. The industry is also beginning to focus more on profitability than volume, which also contributes to the not as extensive stocks
”September last year was very weak and given that autumn sales did not start in August, I expect that we will see increases in sales during the month,” says Mikael Sandström.
