Style index from Svensk Handel Stil shows that sales of clothing in the dealer channel, measured in comparable units and in current prices, fell by 1.2 percent in April compared with the same month last year. The corresponding figure for sales in shoe stores show a decrease of 3.9 percent.

“The cold spring has obviously contributed to the loss of sales,” says Mikael Sandström, chairman of the Svensk Handel Stil.

So far this year, from January to April, sales of clothing increased by 0.9 percent. Footwear sales during the same period increased by 0.1 percent.

“Despite the fact that Easter, which is negative for consumer durables, was in March, April was a bad month for the fashion trade and above all for the footwear industry,” says Mikael Sandström.

“The fashion industry has long had a setback which is also visible through closed shops, numerous bankruptcies and a general decline in profits for the companies which actually show a profit. Among other things, the wage settlement with a wage supplement of 590 SEK and the removal of the youth discount does not make the prospects better, “says Mikael Sandström.

He still believes that the industry will increase sales significantly in May as last year’s comparison month was a near disaster with a decline of around nine percent.
