Norgesgruppen’s grip of the Norwegian grocery market is firmer than ever.
The market share at the end of 2015 was 41.2 percent – all chains increased. And for 2016 the purchasing power will get even bigger with Bunnpris returning.
Nielsen Group released its yearly report over Norwegian grocery retail.
Food chains Kiwi, Menu, Joker and Spar last year ended at a market share of 41.2 per cent of the Norwegian grocery market. You need to go back to 2009 to find a year when the 40 percent limit was reached.
”This is a record for Norgesgruppen, we have reached a good level and is pleased that all our chains increasedtheir market shares in 2015. I want to thank all the staff for a strong effort. The year has been characterized by tough competition, perhaps the toughest ever to get customers to choose our stores,” says CEO Tommy Korneliussen to Dagens Naeringsliv.
”Over half of our growth is organic, and it is a healthy sign that we can grow in our established stores.”
The largest single chain, Rema 1000 also gained market shares, from 23.7 to 24.2 percent. But CEO Ole Robert Reitan has not been happy with the growth pace last year. Overall it’s a continuing growth for discount in Norway as Kiwi was the best performer within Norgesgruppen.
Coop overtook ICA’s stores and stepped from 22.3 to 27.9 percent. Some of the ICA-stores ended up at Norgesgruppen – and Bunnpris who gained 0.5 percent more.
From January 1st, Bunnpris has chained distribution and purchasing partner from Rema to Norgesgruppen’s wholesale company Asko, which gives Norgesgruppen an even better position in Norway.
Generally, Norwegian grocery showed weak growth during 2015, 2.6 percent, reaching a turnover of 163 billion NOK.
